507’s passed Birkdale yesterday on their way to Kirkdale depot then to Birkenhead north depot and from early next week to Newport in South Wales for scrap.

At Birkenhead depot a diesel from rail operations group based at Derby will haul thrm to Newport via Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Abergavenny.

Pictured are the 507’s saying goodbye for 46 years of service and doing in excess of 16 million miles then the diesel which is pictured here at Crewe will haul them.

I doubt that the new stock will last that long.

What a waste!

There are homeless people out there sleeping in shop doorways, who would have been glad of those carriages. Not to mention countless migrants, sitting around in seaside hotels at considerable expense.

Better to re-use and do a basic refit on them, putting in bunks. Line the carriages up in rows on a piece of fenced-off land, provided with a facilities block of toilets and showers.

Btw, when New York recently scrapped hundreds of subway carriages, they put them on a barge, took them offshore and dumped the lot into the sea. This, to create a huge artificial reef, for marine life to inhabit.
